Top Tips for Hiking with Kids

Hiking with little ones is unquestionably such a rewarding experience! And since having my little girl, Lily, I’ve learnt a thing or two along the way!

Exploring the great outdoors with kids can certainly be filled with fun, laughter, and memories. But it does come with its own set of challenges.

Heading on a trundl with your little ones? Here are my top tips for hiking with kids…

1. Start with Local, Short Walks

When you’re hiking with kids, especially toddlers, keep it simple at first. For one thing, start with local walks that are short and manageable for little legs. Planning your hike in advance will help you avoid any surprises and give you an idea of how long it might take. There’s no rush—building confidence and enjoyment is the key!

2. Pack Snacks – Lots of Snacks!

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that snacks are a lifesaver. Toddlers and older kids need fuel, so having plenty of snacks at hand will keep them happy  during the walk. From fruit to crackers, packing a variety of nibbles will make all the difference when little energy levels dip.

3. Get Out in the Morning

I’ve found that Lily is much easier to manage earlier in the day, and  morning starts work best for us. Plus, hikes often take longer than expected when you’re out with young kids.  Starting early gives you plenty of time to enjoy the adventure without feeling rushed.

4. Make Sure They Have the Correct Gear

Comfort is everything for little ones, and the right gear goes a long way. Layers are a must, as the British weather can be unpredictable. And don’t forget proper walking boots. Keeping them cosy and protected will help them enjoy the hike more. For more information on what to pack, here’s my hiking with kids checklist!

5. Always Check the Forecast

This is most important for UK hiking – always check the weather before you go! A sunny day can quickly turn to rain, and it’s important to be prepared. Packing waterproofs or choosing a sheltered walk might prevent a wash out!

6. Hike as Much as You Can

The more you hike, the more your little one will get used to it. Regular outings help build their stamina and love for the outdoors. Even if it’s just a quick jaunt around the local park, every little bit counts towards creating happy hiking habits.

7. Keep Walks Interesting

To keep kids engaged, make the walks fun! Look for boulders they can scramble over, or caves they can explore. Keeping the route varied helps break up the hike and keeps them entertained along the way.

8. Hike with Friends

If you can, hike with other families. Having friends along for the adventure gives your child someone to play with. And a group dynamic can make the hike more enjoyable for everyone. Plus, it’s a great way for you to catch up with friends too!

9. Engage Your Kids

Turn the hike into a game. Maybe you can play ‘I Spy, sing songs or help your child spot wildlife. Whatever you do, keeping their minds engaged is crucial. A distracted toddler is a happy toddler!

10. Choose the Right Carrier

If they are too young to walk the whole way, or you’re taking longer hikes, having a comfortable carrier is essential. Finding one that works for you and your child will make the experience much more enjoyable. There are plenty of carriers designed for hiking that support both parent and child. Here’s a guide on my favourite carriers.

11. Let Them Lead the Way

If your child is old enough, why not let them take the lead? Give them the map or let them decide which path to take next. It makes them feel like they’re part of the adventure and keeps them excited about what’s ahead.

Hiking with kids is about embracing the challenge and finding joy in the little moments. With the right preparation and mindset, every walk can become a special adventure. And without question, you and your child will cherish the memories of them for years to come.
