Get set for 2025: Walking for Exercise and Travel Planning for a Brighter New Year

With the festive season in full swing, many of us are already keen to embrace resolutions that genuinely improve wellbeing. Two simple yet transformative commitments stand out. Firstly, to increase our exercise by walking more and secondly, taking time to plan memorable holidays.

Walking is undoubtedly one of the most accessible forms of exercise, offering far more than just physical benefits. Just 30 minutes of walking can dramatically improve your health, reducing the risk of heart disease, helping to manage weight, and boosting mental wellbeing. It’s an everyday form of exercise that requires nothing more than sturdy walking shoes and a bit of resolve.

The mental health benefits are particularly noteworthy. In a world of constant digital noise, walking offers many opportunities throughout the day for exercise, mindfulness and reflection breaks. Whether you’re navigating summits in the Peak District or taking a brisk walk around a city park, these moments of exercise become a form of moving meditation. They provide a chance to disconnect, clear your mind, and reconnect with nature and the landscape around you.

Adding purpose to a walk brings even more benefits

As a regular walker with trundl, I have to add that helping others while you exercise also has huge benefits.  Knowing that my everyday walks are helping to create donations makes me feel really proud. Particularly as I don’t have to go looking for sponsors or donations – trundl does all that for me.

Planning travel and holidays creates a feeling of optimism

Pairing your walking and exercise resolution with holiday planning adds another layer of joy to the new year. There’s something uplifting about plotting future adventures during the grey winter months. The process of researching destinations, from tranquil coastal cottages to wild Scottish Highland retreats, can be remarkably soothing. It gives you something to anticipate, helping ward off post-Christmas blues and providing a sense of excitement and possibility.

Being Cheshire-based myself, I love browsing Sykes Holiday Cottages.  They’ve been in business for 30+ years, so are reliable and offer a huge choice across the UK.  I particularly like the way they provide inspiration, such as great places to go for walking holidays.  And as a B Corp company, I love that they are part of a growing force for good.

Combine walking and planning for better outcomes all round

As another suggestion, you can use your walking exercise to perfectly complement travel planning. Daily walks can become an opportunity to research potential destinations by listening to travel podcasts, or by letting your mind wander and dream of upcoming adventures. Some walkers use travel as motivation for more exercise. Gradually building their fitness to fully enjoy any active holiday experiences.

It's all about reaching a balance that works for you

These resolutions offer a wonderfully balanced approach to personal wellbeing. They’re not about extreme changes, but gentle, sustainable improvements that can significantly enhance your physical and mental health. So, grab your waterproof jacket, comfortable walking boots, and perhaps a travel guide, and embrace the opportunities that await in the coming year.

As the saying goes, the best journeys begin with a single step.  And this year, those steps can lead you to more exercise and a healthier, happier version of yourself.

Turning walks into empowerment

After 20 years leading teams in large companies, Ellie founded Elevate with Ellie and Elevate Netwalking. Ellie helps teams improve performance by building trust and improving communication through well-being talks and connection to nature. Ellie is an active member of walking for charity app trundl.
